The small village of Khadi is located on an
altitude of 1300 m, along the Rishikesh-Gangotri
Road, 50 km north of Rishikesh, 15 km south of
Chamba. The local farmers grow wheat, rice,
cucumber and ginger. There is a small Shiva
Mandir in the village.
Omkarananda Shiksha Samiti, Khadi, was formed in
the year 2000. It is situated on a small hill,
five minutes walk from the main road. The
classrooms and courtyard have a spectacular view
of the Henval River and the Khadi Village. Even
the charming little Shiva Mandir in the village
is visible from here.
The School runs Nursery Classes to Classes V.
The children come from as far as
4 km away (1.5 hours walk one way). Beside the
core curriculum, the students learn Garhwali and
Hindi songs and play Volleyball, Kabaddi and
Hockey as sports.
The students here look happy and spontaneous.
Perhaps they are grateful for the privilege of
having a wonderful learning environment, one,
that is a rarity in this remote hill region.
